The picture you see below is a close up of the crochet work using thin, plastic bags we get every day from our favorite stores. All over the country ladies are taking what we usually throw away and are making needed sleeping mats for the homeless.

The word is spreading that this is a project anyone can do. The Bertha Ladies Bible Study, which meets Thurs. mornings in room 120, have taken on the challenge. For the next few months, they are gathering supplies and those who don't crochet are cutting the bags. Many bags of bags are being collected. But, many more are needed. It takes between 500-700 bags per mat.

They will be donating these mats to homeless in our own area of Virginia Beach through a local church.

They invite you to donate your bags, and they challenge YOU to get out that crochet hook and make a mat yourself. Follow the link below to a video from a church that will explain how to make this mat.

This mat is waterproof, lightweight, soft, insect proof, insulating, it creates heat on a cold night and it is made from plastic bags.
